About Rob

Biography

I was born in Belgium in 1986. I grew up as a normal kid, doing boy things like playing soccer with my friends. At the age of 15 I quitted playing football because if suffered a lot from injuries at my knees. Then I started to play tennis very intensively for 3 years. During summer season I played more than 90 matches and managed to get more then 4700 points in one season. My highest rank was B+4/6. Then I graduated from secondary school in 2004 and continued my school career at University of Antwerp studying biology. In the next 5 years of hard work, I couldn’t train like I wanted having other priorities. During holiday I always trained 1-3 weeks preparing for a marathon. So from 2006 till 2008 I ran 4 marathons, two of them in Köln, one in Dublin and one in Rome. My best result was a 3h13 and became 4th in the category under 21 years. Because finishing a marathon wasn’t enough anymore, I inscribed for an Ironman race in Belgium in 2008. 4 weeks before that race I bought a race bike and started to cycle. Just after 4 weeks of training I finished the half distance Ironman in just over 5h. In 2009 I graduated as Master of Science in biology, but a few weeks before, I was diagnosed having diabetes mellitus type I. 2 weeks before I was diagnosed at the hospital, I was in Croatia, and I had to drink a lot from the first day. From that point I knew I had diabetes. 8 weeks later, I finished my first full distance triathlon in Belgium and became first in my age-group category under 23 years. That was the sign I had to do something with it being such a competitive athlete with such less training effort. From September 2009 till now I train between 20-40 hours a week and having done already >10 Ironman finishes. My best results so far are my 6th place at Ironman Mexico at the age-group 18-24, 3rd place at Ironman Wales under 25 years, and qualification for Ironman World Championship Kona Hawaii with my 30th place overall (3rd place age-group 25-29) at Ironman Maastricht 2015. In 2012 and 2013 I also become European Champion long distance triathlon for people with diabetes.
